UTAH vs. STANFORD POSTGAME QUOTES
Utah Head Coach Larry Krystkowiak
On Senior Guard Lorenzo Bonam…
Especially when he was generating, you know, he was generating the steals on one end of the floor, and that led to points. He missed a couple technical free throws or it would’ve been a heck of a spurt for him. You know he got his hands on some balls, he was really engaged, I thought, again, it was really neat, and I told our guys to enjoy this today and tomorrow, and not to be complacent.
On Bonam’s intensity this week…
Not really [anything different], not in a practice setting, to be honest with you. I know every day at practice, I addressed the fact that he had his senior night coming up. When he’d do some silly things in practice, committing silly fouls, I’d remind him, ‘Hey, we need to have you on the floor, don’t do that, you’ve got your senior night coming up,’ you know, little reminders and things like that, but not any more of an edge. He’s got a group of about 25 people, I’ve been told, from Michigan, that were all on a train coming in, a great group of people that haven’t seem him live a whole lot this year, so he was obviously dialed in. We need to find a way to trick him and tell him it’s senior night again; maybe we’ll give him another jersey and do it again.
On getting the fourth-seed in the Pac-12 tournament outright…
Yeah, I would’ve lied to everyone for 30 years and I would’ve never mentioned a tie if we would’ve got it based on a tie either. I’m pretty proud of the process, and how it went down. It was an uphill battle for us. I talked about it three weeks ago, I think everybody thought it was crazy when I said we were still aspiring to be the four-seed until somebody tells me otherwise. A few things fell into place for us, you know, from outside sources, and we took care of all the business that we needed to take care of, and I’m really proud. Up to this point, we’re starting to tap into our potential I think. We’re not making the same mistakes, and there seems to be a sense of unity on our team, so tie or no tie, I’m pretty pumped. That’s why they have a tie-breaking system, obviously if we would’ve tied, but I assume we did something right.
On Utah fighting back…
That’s really cool. It’s really cool and that’s the thing, when we were talking in timeouts, we needed to dig deep, it wasn’t going to be easy. I’ve been proud of our guys, you know, all year, for kind of, when our backs are against the wall. So, to have it come together, these guys work really hard, I mean, I’m happy for them to have that come together and to have the kind of enthusiasm they have in the locker room and all their trust in each other and banding together, it’s something that we’ve talked about for a long time with the culture of our program.
On the pre-season projections…
I’ve always got a kick out of those polls, and I think that if you look back, we’ve always been ahead of where they picked us, there’s always a lot of fun in that. You know, early on, we were picked twelfth, and you know what, we finished eleventh the first year, we didn’t finish twelfth. So, there’s a lot of satisfaction in that. You [have to] start somewhere, you know, with the polls and different things, but I didn’t care when we were picked first last year by some people and second, it’s all irrelevant. But it’s important, you don’t want to be an under-achiever, an over-paid NBA player that’s not earning their keep, so I think it’s important. We’ve accomplished some things and played maybe better than people expected, but that’s really kind of a moot point. We still have work left to do.
Senior Guard Lorenzo Bonam
On his Senior Night performance…
Because I was the only one. I was the only senior, I just, I put more heart into it. With more seniors on the team, they just try to take it upon themselves to do stuff ‘cause they’re seniors and it’s their last game at home. With me being the only one, I could do more than I usually do, basically, that I should just keep up for the rest of the postseason.
On his determination to win…
We need that fourth spot. It would be hard to play four games instead of three, so with that fourth spot we probably got a bye in there, which was what we were gunning for. And more than twenty wins, twenty wins in a season. That’s good.
On his steals in the second half…
They were holding the ball with one hand. Usually if they’re holding the ball with two you wouldn’t go for it because he can move it and you’d hit his hand, but usually if you’re holding it with one the ref would not really look at it as a fall because you’re being really lackadaisical with the ball. With that being said, he held it in the air with one hand, so I just went for both of them.
On his family’s game-day attendance…
It means a lot. It means everything to me. They usually, they don’t get to go to no games, not even in high school, so just to have them here, and to have them drive from Detroit, it’s crazy. But to have them here, it’s a blessing like this. It’s good to have family like that in front of them. It’s just felt like I had to show up.

Stanford Head Coach Jerod Hasse
On the final minutes of the game…
We need to play better down the stretch. Especially as the second half of the conference season has unfolded, I am really excited as to what can come of this team. I think we are in a position to be pretty good in the future. Down the stretch, winning on the road is hard. It is very hard. It is going to be a process to teach the team and to get us to the point where we can win consistently on the road and in the Pac-12. We are going to get there. That part is not going to be the issue but it will happen. We will get refocused and learn how to finish off these games.
On last few plays and physical play down low…
I didn’t see the first play and I didn’t see the other play that was called so I don’t know what happened. I think we use it to make sure we handle adversity better, make us focus, play through contact and finish plays off. All things we continue to talk about. We put ourselves in a position to win the basketball game and we didn’t make plays down the stretch.
On Dorian Pickens bounce back game…
I thought it was important for him to hit his first shot tonight and he played with a lot of confidence. Robert [Cartwright] did a nice job, especially, distributing the basketball all over the court. When Dorian is shooting the ball well, we really become a very, very dangerous team and so it is a game changer type of thing. I think it also builds confidence for the rest of the guys too, to put the ball in the basket.
On Marcus Allen’s play…
He has tons of freedom but it does need to come after advantage situations like in transitions, in the middle of a play, or where we call a designed play for him. He has a great understanding of that. The coaching staff of this program continues to try to provide him with different situations where he can get driving opportunities and easy baskets.
On philosophy for next few days preparing for the Pac-12 Tournament…
We will get rested and get ready to play our tails off and make some noise.
