Tim McDermott is set to enter his fifth season as an assistant coach and his eighth overall with the Utah Lacrosse program in 2026. He has been on staff for each of Utah’s Division I seasons, joining the program in 2019 as director of operations before being named assistant coach prior to the 2022 campaign.
In his four prior seasons as an assistant coach, McDermott has seen the Utes win at least a share of the ASUN regular season championship each year with two outright titles (2022, ’23). The Utes also won the conference tournament crown in 2023 and ’24, earning the program’s first two berths into the NCAA Tournament.
All told, 27 all-conference accolades have rolled into Salt Lake City with McDermott on the coaching staff, along with five all-America awards.
He was with the Utes for a program-record 12-win season in 2023, including an undefeated 9-0 mark for the team in ASUN play.
In 2022, McDermott helped the Utes to an ASUN regular season title and 42 school records with Utah winning a then-program-best 10 games (10-4 overall). The Utes finished the year leading the ASUN in eight statistical categories with seven total Utah players earning a spot on the ASUN All-Conference teams.
During his time as the director of operations, McDermott handled the day-to-day logistics of running the lacrosse program for the Utes. Working closely with both the athletes and the coaching staff, McDermott was integral in transitioning the lacrosse program from a club sport to a Division I team.
During his time with the program as a club sport, he served as an assistant coach and director of operations for two seasons, helping lead the Utes to the 2018 Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Conference championship and two appearances in the Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Association tournament. Utah finished 16-1 overall in 2018 and had seven All-Americans, nine all-conference selections and finished fifth in the final coaches’ poll.
McDermott also spent two seasons as an assistant at Virginia from 2013-14, specifically working with the face-off specialists and goalies. Prior to his stint at Virginia, McDermott also spent time at Cortland State, Deep Run High School in Richmond, Va. and at Loyola (Md.).
As a player, McDermott was a two-time All-American and first-team All-SUNYAC while at SUNY Geneseo. He transferred to Loyola Maryland for his senior season.
McDermott was a reserve player for Major League Lacrosse's Chicago Machine, playing in one game in 2010. McDermott, who is from Cortland, N.Y., earned his degree in business administration from SUNY Geneseo in 2007 and an MBA from Loyola in 2010.
