GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - In Saturday's second game of the series, the University of Utah baseball team edged Mesa State, 8-7, in an eleven inning thriller.
The Mavericks rallied in the bottom of the ninth, driving in five runs to send the game to extra innings. In the top half of the eleventh, Ute designated hitter Nate Weese hit a sacrifice fly to left to score pinch runner Jed Chrisman, giving Utah an 8-7 advantage.
Pitcher Ryan Bailey threw for three scoreless innings and held Mesa State at check in the bottom of the eleventh to seal the victory for the Utes. First baseman Ryan Johnerson led the Utah's offensive attack driving in four runs on three singles and a home run. Mesa State (6-3) won the first game of the three game set with the Utes (8-5), and the two teams will play in the rubber game in the series finale on Feb. 21, at noon.
