CINCINNATI – The Utah baseball team fell to Cincinnati on Saturday in a 20-10 contest at the UC Baseball Stadium. The game ended in the eighth inning due to the Big 12 Conference run rule.
Â
Everyone in the lineup reached base for Utah (12-8, 2-3 Big 12) and eight players had at least one hit. The Utah bats combined for 13 hits, seven walks and struck out just three times, but the Utes were unable to keep pace with big innings from UC.
Â
Luke Jacobs was 3-for-4, scored three times and had a triple to lead off the game.
Jake Long,
Daniel Arambula and
Cameron Gurney each had two hits out of the Nos. 2-4 spots, respectively and Long drove in a career-best four RBIs. Arambula tied a season-high with three RBIs as well. Eight-hole hitter
Matt Flaharty scored after reaching base in all three of his plate appearances.
Â
Long (15), Gurney (13) and Arambula (12) each extended their respective hitting streaks.
Â
Utah broke the ice quickly as Jacobs led off the ballgame with a triple off the top of the wall in right center field. It took a hard carom off the wall as Jacobs went in standing up and claimed his second triple in Utah's last three games.
Â
A sac fly for Cincinnati evened the score in the home half of the first, but Utah answered with a five spot in the second inning.
Bradley Navarro led off the inning with a 360-foot solo shot as the Utes pulled in front by a 2-1 score. Four batters later, Jacobs knocked in
Jet Gilliam with an RBI single, then Long followed with a two-run double that plated both Jacobs and Flaharty. After a Cincinnati pitching change, Gurney stepped into the batter's box and sent the first pitch to left field, bringing home Long and giving the Utes a 6-1 lead.
Â
Long added a two-out single in the third inning to bring in Flaharty and swell the advantage to 7-1.
Â
But Cincinnati came roaring back with four runs in the third inning, a three-spot in the fourth and two runs apiece in the fifth and sixth. Utah did get one back in the top of the fifth on a groundout from Long to give him his fourth RBI of the day. Cincinnati led after six innings by a 12-8 score.
Â
Two quick outs began the top of the seventh, but Utah still managed to scratch across two runs. The Utes loaded the bases as
Jack Kleveno singled, Jacobs was hit by a pitch and Long walked. Arambula lifted a single into left field as Kleveno and Jacobs scored to cut the deficit to 12-10 at stretch time.
Â
The Bearcats would put the game away, though, with six runs in the seventh inning and a two-run homer in the eighth from Jack Natili to bring the game to an end.
