CINCINNATI – Eight Utah players combined for 14 hits and
Bradley Navarro went 3-for-5 with three RBIs as the Utes withstood a furious push from Cincinnati and won the series finale by a 13-11 score on Sunday at the UC Baseball Stadium.
Â
Trailing 11-10 to start the top of the ninth inning,
Jake Long led off with a base hit before
Cameron Gurney walked on nine pitches to put the tying run in scoring position.
Bradley Navarro, who had a hot bat all series long, then smacked a two-out double to score Long and level the score at 11.
Â
Nevan Noonan was next up and was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Matt Flaharty then lifted a bloop single into left field to score two runs and put the lead in the Utah dugout with a 13-11 score.
Â
Ian Lenius (2-0) went back out for the bottom of the ninth inning before being relieved by
Kaden Soder, who picked up his first save as a Utah Ute. Soder struck out his first two batters faced before a ground out ended the ballgame—all with the tying run at the plate.
Â
For the afternoon, Utah (13-8, 3-3 Big 12) had a season-high seven doubles as a team.
Luke Jacobs had a pair of two-baggers, becoming the first Utah player this season with multiple doubles in a game.
Â
Long had a two-run double in the sixth inning that extended his hitting streak to 16 straight games. It is tied for the longest hitting streak by a Utah player since 2019. Gurney (14) and
Daniel Arambula (13) extended their respective hitting streaks as well.
Â
Jacobs and Long each scored two runs and Gurney tied a season-best with four runs driven in, the latter thanks in part to a three-run home run. Navarro homered for the second time in the series while Noonan also went 2-for-4 with a double and run scored.
Â
Gurney gave the Utes an early lead with a 414-foot homer, putting Utah ahead 3-0 after half an inning of play.
Â
Cincinnati plated a pair in the home half of the third, taking advantage of a Utah error along with a string of walks to pull within 3-2.
Â
The visitors added crooked numbers in each of the middle innings, including a three-spot in the sixth. Jacobs and Long had back-to-back doubles in the sixth, driving in a total of three runs as the Utes stretched their advantage to 10-2.
Â
But the Bearcats would not go away and pulled back within striking distance after batting around in the sixth and pushing five runs across. UC added four more in the seventh inning as the home club pulled in front for the first time in the game.
Â
Needing to put up a defensive zero, Lenius tossed a 1-2-3 eighth inning to set the stage for Utah's ninth inning heroics.
Â
Next Up
