The First Pitch: Things to Know
- Utah returns home on Tuesday to face in-state rival BYU for a non-conference game on Charlie Monfort Field at America First Ballpark.
- The Utes are coming off of a three-game Big 12 series at Cincinnati that wrapped up with a 13-11 victory on Sunday over the Bearcats. The Utes rallied in the ninth inning, scoring three runs to overcome an 11-10 deficit and secure the victory. Bradley Navarro tied the game with a clutch two-out double before Matt Flaharty's bloop single drove in the go-ahead runs.
- The Utes' offense powered the victory with 14 hits, including a season-high seven doubles, while Cameron Gurney contributed a three-run homer and four RBIs. Despite Cincinnati's eight-run comeback to take the lead in the seventh inning, Ian Lenius and Kaden Soder shut the door on the mound in the ninth to seal the win.
- The Utes are off to a 7-1 start in their new home. Utah swept a four-game series against Grand Canyon to open the new yard and shut out GCU in the first three games. The homestand continued with a series victory to open Big 12 play against the Arizona Wildcats, with both teams scoring exactly 21 runs across the three games.
- In the 2025 campaign, Utah and BYU split their season series with each team taking two games. The Utes won the rubber game in the Big 12 Conference series at Smith's Ballpark before BYU won the non-conference midweek matchup down in Provo.
- Gurney has been a key contributor to Utah's offense this season. The first baseman leads the team in RBIs (26), batting average (.367) and on-base percentage (.485). In last Tuesday's midweek versus Washington State, he crossed the 100-hit milestone for his career at Utah.
- Jake Long comes into the BYU game riding a team-best 16-game hitting streak, with Gurney (14) following closely. The 16-game hitting streak ties the longest hitting streak for a Utah player since 2019. Long's .366 batting average, 24 RBIs and .438 on-base percentage each place second on the team, following Gurney.
- Following Tuesday's matchup with the Cougars, Utah will get set for a three-game conference set at home against Kansas State.
