The First Pitch: Things to Know
- Coming off an eight-game homestand to open the new Charlie Monfort Field at America First Ballpark, Utah Baseball heads out to Cincinnati for a three-game series to resume Big 12 play.
- Utah has won eight of its last nine games, including a 7-1 stretch to christen America First Ballpark. Utah swept a four-game series against Grand Canyon to open the new yard and shut out GCU in the first three games. The homestand continued with a series victory to open Big 12 play against the Arizona Wildcats, with both teams scoring exactly 21 runs across the three games.
- Utah wrapped up its eight-game homestand Tuesday with an 8-5 win over former conference foe Washington State at home. It was a staff day for the Utes, with Demitri Diamant earning his first collegiate win and David Galindo recording his first save for Utah.
- Jake Long enters the Cincinnati series riding a team-best 13-game hitting streak, with Cameron Gurney (11) and Daniel Arambula (10) following closely.
- Utah secured the win in Saturday's game in the bottom of the 10th inning, earning a 7-6 victory. The series saw each of the first two games go into extra innings. Arizona took the opener with two runs in the 11th inning that went unanswered. Utah responded in game two, scoring twice in the bottom of the 10th to even the series. It marked the first time since April 7-8, 2023 (vs. No. 23 UCLA), that Utah played consecutive extra-inning games.
- Jet Gilliam delivered the decisive blow in the rubber game against Arizona, lining a 2-2 pitch into left field for a two-run single to seal the walk-off victory, and series win.
- Gurney has been a key contributor to Utah's offense this season. The first baseman leads the team in RBIs (19), batting average (.371) and on-base percentage (.500). On Tuesday's midweek versus Washington State, he crossed the 100-hit milestone for his career at Utah.
