SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis team got its first taste of a season filled with nationally ranked competitors, with #42 Northwestern defeating the Utes 7-2 at the Eccles Tennis Center. Despite the team setback, No. 1 singles player Megan Payne stepped her game up a notch, upsetting the nation's 35th ranked player, Katherine Nasser, 7-6, 4-6, 6-3. Payne was also part of the Ute's only other win, combining with Irini Kotoglou at No. 2 doubles for an 8-2 drubbing over the Wildcat tandem of Colleen Cheng and Lia Jackson. Although dropping the match, Head Coach John Tsumas was pleased with the teams effort in the first dual match of the season. "Megan had a strong performance all-around," said Coach Tsumas. "Irini and Linn (Ronnberg) played strong, Northwestern is deep and more experienced. This match experience should help us as a team." The Utes will have to jump right back on the horse tomorrow as they face #1 Florida at the Eccles Tennis Center at noon.
