Coaches Quotes:
Ski Director Pat Miller:
"Our main focus going into the regional is to qualify people that we need for the NCAA Championships. We have three people on the bubble that need to ski well to get in. The regionals are important, but it's more important in respect to qualifying than anything. I tend to think that we will still qualify a full team. As long as I've been here, we've always had a full team for the Championships. If things don't go well, this could be the last meet for some of our seniors. They'll need to rise to the occasion. For the people that have already qualified, they need to try and get higher seeds. In all of the meets, we've been consistently third in the team standings, but we've never been out of the picture for first place. We need the skiers to have a complete meet. We need to be consistent. We haven't done that yet."
Next Up: The Regional Championship marks the end of the regular season for the Utes. Next, they will travel to Sunday River, Maine to compete in the NCAA Championships. Utah, as a perenial power, has won two of the last three championships. Last year, the Utes missed winning a third straight title by 2.5 points. The NCAA Championships begin Mar. 10, and continue through until the Mar. 13.
Last Week: The University of Utah Ski Invitational concluded on Saturday, Feb. 21, with the closest finish of the season. New Mexico came back from fourth place after the alpine races, to down Denver by one point in the final standings. The Lobos amassed 411 points to Denver's 410 followed by Utah at third with 389.5 race points. Frode Kollerud led the Ute nordic squad taking first in the men's 10K classic cross country race. Kollerud edged Colorado's Magnus Eriksson by fifty-two seconds to take first. Rune Kollerud also turned in a solid finish placing tenth. Injuries and illness plagued the women's cross country team as three of five skiers were sidelined. Kristina Joder and Lene Pedersen carried the women's squad, finishing twelfth and fifteenth respectively.
