SUNDAY RIVER, Maine - Day one of the NCAA Ski Championships included the men's and women's giant slalom. Colorado is leading the competition with 189 points, followed by Dartmouth with 182 points and then Utah in third with 175 points.
Colorado's Aimee-Noel Hartley won the women's giant slalom with a total time of 2:22.91. Freshman Elizabeth Sherry was the Utes' top finisher taking seventh, and was followed by Sabrina Lawrence who was right behind her in the eighth position. Tina Kavcic was Utah's third qualifier for the women's alpine team, and finished seventeenth.
The men's giant slalom was Dartmouth's David Viele whose time of 2:11.63 earned him the individual title. Three Ute skiers finished in the top fifteen, lead by Ryan Forsyth who placed ninth, then followed by Scott Woodland in tenth, and Markus Leunig who tied for thirteenth. The outlook is good for the Utes as their strongest events still lie ahead in the competition.
Tomorrow marks the halfway point of the championship with the women's 5K freestyle cross country and the men's 10K freestyle cross country. The competition concludes Saturday, Mar. 13, with the awards ceremony at 1:00 p.m. EST.
