SALT LAKE CITY – University of Utah director of skiing
Fredrik Landstedt has been named Coach of the Year by the Utah Sports Commission, announced on Monday morning.
Landstedt will be recognized in April at the Governor's State of Sport Awards. The Utah Ski Team was previously honored as Team of the Year during the 2023 iteration of the awards event.
Since arriving in Salt Lake City in July 2018, Landstedt has reestablished the Utah Ski Team as a national power at the collegiate level. Landstedt has led the Utes to six of the last seven NCAA Championships (2019, '21, '22, '23, '25, '26) plus a national runner-up finish in 2024.
No other program in the mixed-gender era of NCAA skiing has enjoyed such a run, which included four straight team titles from 2019-23. A nation-leading 108 NCAA All-America awards and 16 individual NCAA championships have been collected by Utah skiers with Landstedt at the helm.
The last two titles have been especially memorable as Utah had to battle back from deficits to win the 2025 and 2026 championship meets. Most recently, the Utes came out on top in a back-and-forth battle on home snow, keyed by 15 All-American honors and individual championships for
Johs Braathen Herland (men's giant slalom) and
Mons Melbye (men's 20K freestyle). The team title came as the Utes battled injuries and illness throughout the season.
With Landstedt at the helm, the 2025 squad put on another special display of resilience. The Utes were third in the meet standings after the first day of competition and trailed by 61 points. It was not insurmountable by any means, but the team needed to turn the page quickly from slalom and respond with solid results the final three days. They certainly did:
Erica Lavén had a commanding victory in the women's 7.5K classic before Herland kept the momentum going with a title in men's giant slalom.
Joe Davies helped put on the exclamation point with a commanding victory—by over a minute—in the men's 20K freestyle as Utah returned to the pinnacle of the collegiate skiing world.
Combined between the 2022 and 2026 Winter Olympics, 14 athletes with Utah Ski Team connections have earned the privilege to represent their countries either as an athlete or coach. Eleven of the 14 have been coached at some point by Landstedt and his staff at Utah.
For all the highlights on snow, his student-athletes have been just as successful in the classroom. Since 2018, eight Academic All-America nods have gone to the Utes. In 2023-24, both the men's and women's teams earned a perfect 100% Graduation Success Rate (GSR) from the NCAA.
