BOZEMAN, Mont. – Sophomore
Johs Braathen Herland claimed his sixth win of the season and five Utah Utes posted top-10 finishes across the men's and women's races in Thursday's RMISA slalom qualifier at Bridger Bowl. Freshman
Christina Jacobsen led the Utah's women's team, placing fifth—one of three top-10 finishers for the Utah women's team.
Herland logged the fifth-fastest time on the first run (48.09) and followed with the fourth-fastest of the second run (47.19) for a total time of 1:35.26 to earn the win, and his 10th podium appearance this season.
Pierick Charest finished in seventh place (1:36.56) for his fifth top-10 result this season. He improved from 14th after the first run (49.17) by logging the seventh-fastest time of the second run (47.39).
Sindre Myklebust was 11th (1:36.94)—just sixth hundredths of a second away from the top 10—and
Harry Hoffman placed 15th (1:37.06).
"I'm really proud of how our team performed today," said head alpine coach
JJ Johnson. "Johs continues to prove he can get the job done from any position and on any hill. He has the ability to make adjustments on the fly. We also had solid performances from Pierick, Sindre and Harry."
On the women's side, Jacobsen (1:43.90) was followed by fellow top-10 finishers
Melanie Dahlberg (8th; 1:44.48) and
Kaila Lafreniere (10th; 1:45.24).
Maddie Kaiserman rounded out the Utes' four finishers in 16th (1:46.44).
"Seeing Christina ski with freedom and relaxation was a joy, and it earned her a top-5 finish," Johnson said. "Mel had an impressive first run, with just a slight bobble, and her skiing and speed are outstanding at the moment. Kaila is increasingly revealing her potential, and I'm proud of how all the women raced today."
Jacobsen and Dahlberg tied for the fourth-fastest time in the first run (51.29), en route to their top-10 finishes, while Lafreniere (16th/6th) and Kaiserman (20th/10th) each put down significantly faster second runs to improve their overall standings. Dahlberg recorded her team-leading ninth top-10 finish of the season, while Lafreniere claimed her fourth, and Jacobsen her second.
"The conditions were excellent today, and it's great to see the crew skiing relaxed as we move into our Regionals," Johnson added.
