Last Meet Recap: The Utes produced their highest point total of the season as they won the Western State College Invitational last weekend. Utah's score of 412 was 54 points higher than second place Colorado. The victory marks the second time this season that Utah has won an invitational. In women's events, Marianne Winge took second in the giant slalom followed by Sabrina Lawrence, who placed fifth. In the slalom, Alicia Howard continued her hot streak with her second place finish and Sandra Kuehni took fourth. In women's cross country, Hailey Wappett and Kristin Tjelle led the Utes in both the freestyle and classic events. Wappett finished second in the 5K freestyle with a time of 14.28 and Tjelle placed in the top five in both events, taking fourth in both the 5K freestyle and the 15K classic.
In men's events, Alain Britt-Cote had a breakthrough race with his first win of the year. He placed first in the giant slalom and sixth in the slalom. Cross country events featured Utah's brother tandem of Frode and Rune Kollerud. Frode placed second in the 20K classic and first in the 10K freestyle. Rude was right behind him taking third in the 20K classic and second in the 20K classic.
The big weekend improved Utah's chances to qaulify a full team for the NCAA Championships in March. Many individual skiers have already qualified for positions and are now competing for top seeds.
Utah Ski Director Pat Miller Says: "Many factors contributed to our success. One element is that we had a full and healthy contingent. It was a great confidence builder, and we need to keep the momentum. Our skiers are very experienced for the most part and they have the sense that it's time to perform. In looking at both the alpine and cross country, it is a very balanced team. Our main focus now is consistency, like it always is."
