SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah Ski Team is in fourth place after one day of competition at the NCAA Western Regional Competition in Jackson, Wyo.. Leading the competition is defending national champion Colorado, followed by Denver, then New Mexico.
The Utes are hurt this weekend by the absence of two of their top cross country performers. "One thing that will hurt our team score," says head coach Kevin Sweeney, "is that Rob Whitney and Kristina Joder will be competing in Lake Placid." Their loss resulted in the Utes slipping to fourth in the men's and fifth in the women's skate cross country races.
Utah's alpine team put together solid performances in the giant slalom to push the Utes up to fourth, and within striking range of the leaders. Scott Woodland, Jernej Bukovec and Jed Schuetze all finished in the top fifteen in the men's race with Woodland leading the way in eighth. Sabrina Lawrence and Petra Svet skied well for the women's team finishing tenth and twelfth respectively.
The Regionals will conclude on Satruday with the slalom races and the classic cross country races.
