Utes at a Glance
The Utah baseball team is 6-9 so far this season including two wins over No. 16 ranked Loyola Marymount. The Utes returned four starters and 13 letterwinners to the 2000 team while incorporating 15 new comers to the program.
Ute Travel
Utah travels to Grand Junction, Colo., March 3-5 to play Mesa State in a four-game series. The Utes and the Mavericks face-off on Friday at 2:00 p.m. A double header is scheduled for Saturday beginning at 12:00 p.m. A single game will round out the weekend on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. All games will be played at Suplizio Field.
A Quick Look at Mesa State
The Mavericks are 5-8 on the season posting a .275 team batting average. Mesa State owns three wins over Northern Colorado (8-0, 9-7, 5-0) and has claimed solo victories over Grand Canyon (8-7) and Brigham Young (14-4). The Mavericks boast 25 doubles, nine home runs and 68 RBI during the 2000 campaign. On the mound, the Mesa State pitching staff posts a 6.59 ERA including 70 strikeouts. In the field, Mesa State logs an impressive .962 team fielding percentage. Five Mavericks have perfect 1.000 records after playing 13 games and recording a minimum of 25 putouts. Last season, the Mavericks finished with a 42-17 record and the 1999 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference title. Mesa State is lead by first-time head coach Chris Hanks.
Utes in the Mountain West
Utah leads the Mountain West Conference with a .972 team fielding percentage. Utah records 366 putouts, 150 assists and only 15 errors. The Utes are second in the league with a 5.53 ERA. Utah leads the conference allowing only 125 hits, 18 doubles, nine home runs and 88 runs allowed. The Ute pitching staff has kept the opponent batting average to .273, ranking second in the MWC.
Recent Results
The Utes won one game and lost three to San Diego Feb. 25-27. Utah dropped the first game in a 6-1 contest with the Toreros. The Utes were only able to score one run in the game when junior Mike Goff and freshman Donald Hawes hit back-to-back doubles n the seventh innings. In Saturday's double header, Utah took the first game 6-5. The Utes jumped to an early lead scoring a solo run in the first and three runs in the third inning before giving up five runs to the Toreros. The Utes tied the game with a single run in the sixth inning and claimed their victory with a run in the top of the ninth. Sam Swenson led the Utes hitting 3-for-4 and pounding two doubles. Utah dropped their last two games of the San Diego series 3-1 and 2-3. The Utes scored only one run against the Toreros in the second game of Utah's double header in the first innings. Brit Pannier and Swenson both slammed doubles their first at bats for the score. In the final game of the series, San Diego scored three runs in the first three innings of play holding the Utes until the eighth inning when they scored two runs on a double and two singles. The series brings Utah to a 6-9 record.
On the Mound
Sophomore pitcher Mitch Maio is 1-0 maintaining a perfect 0.00 ERA. The hurler walked onto the Utah team as a freshman in 1997. He spent his freshman season as a redshirt before jumping into the Utah relief rotation last season. In 2000, Maio leads the team with six appearances. Playing only 12.1 innings, Maio has struck out 20 batters. He posts a .098 opponent batting average, allowing only four hits and one unearned run facing 41 batters. Maio leads the Mountain West Conference in ERA, runs allowed and opposing batting average. He ranks third in games finished (6) and saves (1).
Junior transfer David Ebright is 2-3 on the season with a 4.94 ERA. The pitcher has made five appearances for the Utes and leads the team pitching 31 innings, including one complete game. Ebright is second on the team with 19 strikeouts. Facing 125 batters, he has allowed only 32 hits and 17 earned runs posting a .256 opponent batting average. In the Mountain West, Ebright is third in innings pitched and fifth in games started (5).
Senior hurler Jared Cavaness is 1-2 posting a 5.86 ERA. The starter has made five appearances for Utah pitching 27.2 innings, including one complete game, to rank second on the team. Cavaness ranks third on the team with 17 strikeouts. He has faced 107 batters this season allowing only 30 hits and 18 earned runs for a .280 opponent batting average. Cavaness ranks sixth in the conference in innings pitched and 10th with five games started. He is tied for second in the league with one pick off.
Snow College transfer Jon Lewis is third for the Utes with a 3.38 ERA and a 1-0 record. The junior has made four appearances for the Utah relief staff playing 10.2 innings. He is fourth on the team with 10 strikeouts. He has faced 35 batters giving up 11 hits and four earned runs tallying a .314 opponent batting average. Lewis is also tied for second in the Mountain West with one runner picked off.
Rounding the Bases
Junior Jed Chrisman leads the Utah batting brigade with a .377 average. The rightfielder leads the team with 20 hits, two home runs and 10 RBI. He also posts two doubles and a .528 slugging percentage. In the field, Chrisman records a perfect defensive percentage with 20 putouts and one assist.
Freshman Brit Pannier has jumped into the Utah lineup starting seven of 12 games played. He posts a .323 batting average ranking second on the team. The outfielder has 10 hits and leads the Utes with two triples. He also has a pair of doubles and RBI. Against San Diego, Pannier helped the Utes to a 6-5 victory slamming a double and triple. He is tied for first in the conference in doubles.
Centerfielder Sam Swenson leads the Utes with seven doubles. He posts a .321 batting average with 18 hits, one triple and two home runs. He is second on the team with eight RBI and has a .589 batting average. Swenson ranks third in the Mountain West in doubles and 10th with 33 total bases. The junior records a perfect fielding percentage. Starting all 15 games, he has 31 putouts in centerfield.
Sophomore Nate Weese leads the Utes in the field. The first baseman has a .993 fielding percentage with 143 putouts, eight assists and only one error. The feat ranks Weese first in the conference in putouts and chances (153). He is ninth in the conference fielding eight double plays. At the plate, Weese logs a .250 batting average. He is third on the team with 15 hits including one double, two home runs and five RBI.
Catcher Donald Hawes ranks fourth on the squad with a .286 batting average. The sophomore is fifth on the team with 10 hits and six RBIs. He also posts a perfect fielding percentage with 61 putouts and nine assists, ranking second on the team. Hawes is fourth in the conference in fielding percentage.
