SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis team improved to 3-2 in the Mountain West Conference (5-7 overall), handing Air Force only its second loss of the dual match season, 7-2.
Utah fed off gutsy performances by Anna Stechert and Cassie Kasteler at the nos. 4 and 2 spots to post a dominant 5-1 singles mark.
Stechert, suffering a shoulder injury, battled the pain with a huge effort beating Nadine Lynn, 6-2, 6-2, while Kasteler came from behind in a three-setter to close out singles over Brooke Parsons, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. Megan Payne-Dorny made quick work of Kristel Chuntraruk, 6-0, 6-1 at the top spot. Frida Kareld and Linne Ronnberg defeated Kelli O'Bryant and Heather Shelby, 6-3, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-2, respectively in the five and six spots. Irini Kotoglou was handed the only Ute loss, as she retired due to injury (shoulder and knee), against Julie Weiss who led 6-1, 3-2 before the submission.
In doubles play, the Utes took two of three from the Falcons to further solidify the victory.
"I felt like Anna [Stechert] made the difference for us tonight," said Coach John Tsumas. "Her effort strengthened our lineup. Both she and Irini [Kotoglou] have been battling injuries, and she gave us a boost with her competitive presence."
Cassie [Kasteler] had a good win coming from behind. We were dominant everywhere else," said Tsumas.
"I had a good early start in my match," said senior Anna Stechert. "I tried not to think about the injury and let [Nadine] Lynn get in her game."
