SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis team (6-7, 3-2 MWC) won its second straight match, beating Boise State 5-4 Sunday at the Eccles Tennis Center.
Megan Payne-Dorny came from behind in the first set against Pia-Lena Ander, then cruised at No. 1 singles for a 6-4, 6-1 win. At No. 3, Utah's Cassie Kasteler upended Catherine Rinaldi, 6-4, 6-2. Frida Kareld picked up an injury retirement win over Victoria Gimbers at No. 4, while Linn Ronnberg demolished Heather Thiry in the six spot, 6-1, 6-2.
Utah won the match with its fifth team point, due to Boise State defaulting No. 2 doubles. The Broncos won the other two doubles contests.
"Our team has risen up a level mentally the last two matches," said Coach John Tsumas. "We are starting to show some positive emotion on big points, which has correlated into good things for us in critical situations."
"All of our losses have been to ranked teams. Our wins to opponents outside the top-75 have been dominant, which puts us on the bubble for an NCAA regional bid. We are looking for our first decisive upset against BYU, to gain momentum." said Tsumas.
