SALT LAKE CITY - Kevin Sweeney, the Assistant Skiing Coach in charge of cross country at the University of Utah for nine years, has been promoted to Head Coach for Men's and Women's Skiing. The announcement came from U. Associate Athletics Director Amy Hackett on Wednesday.
Sweeney takes over after serving as Head Coach on an interim basis this past season. He guided the Ute men's and women's teams to a fourth-place finish in the 2000 NCAA Championships, hosted by the U. in March. Since joining the Utah program in 1992, Sweeney has helped direct the Utes to three national championships and three second place finishes. He has also coached eight NCAA champions.
Highly regarded among his peers, Sweeney was invited to coach at the 1999 Nordic World Championships in Ramsau, Austria. Two of his skiers have gone on to represent the United States in the Olympic Games, while three others have skied in the World Junior Championships.
The Colorado native graduated cum laude from the University of Hew Hampshire in 1985.
"I'm very excited to be given the opportunity to continue coaching here at the University of Utah," said Sweeney. "I'm very excited also to continue building the legacy of Utah skiing. We've had tremendous success the past decade, and it's something I want to continue to foster here. I'm hoping to continue to build our program, and make it known both nationally and internationally as one of the top skiing programs."
"We're excited about the experience Kevin brings to his new position," said Hackett. "Our cross country program has always been strong, and we look for Kevin's leadership to keep Utah skiing among the nation's dominant programs."
