SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team fell to Air Force in a 9-8 contest today. The loss drops Utah to a 24-28 season and 14-15 Mountain West Conference record. The Utes scored eight runs on eight hits with two errors and gave up nine runs on 13 hits with one error.
Both teams struggled through the game allowing the score to fluctuate during all nine innings before Air Force claimed the victory. Utah scored its first runs in the first inning on a two-shot home run by first baseman Nate Weese*his 13th of the season. Sophomore Brit Pannier also had a homer in the game bringing in two runs in the bottom of the eighth. The designated hitter also scored a run and tallied three RBI in the game.
Weese led the Utes at the plate going 2-for-4, also hitting a double and scoring a pair of runs and RBI. Freshman leftfielder Donnie Saba was 2-for-5 in the game pounding two doubles and scoring one run. Second baseman Adam Castleton scored two runs in the game and one RBI on a triple to centerfield.
Pitcher Matt McAfee earned the loss for Utah pitching two innings of relief. He faced nine batters, gave up three hits and two runs while striking out four. Ryan Bailey started on the mound for Utah pitching the first 4.1 innings of the game. He faced 25 batters, gave up seven hits, four runs and struck out four batters.
The Utes and the Falcons round out the three-game series with a final match-up tomorrow at 12:00 p.m., at Franklin Covey Field.
