The last cross country World Cup competition to be held in the United States was in December of 1989 when Mountain Dell, near Salt Lake City, hosted. This week, Soldier Hollow will be hosting a World Cup event at their 2002 Olympic Cross-Country venue.
The group of World Cup competitors is composed of 20 men and 16 women based on results of the Continental Cup races in Canada and the Chevy Truck U.S. championships, in which the Utah cross country team recentley competed, in McCall, Idaho.
Ute skiers, Patrick Casey and Kristina Joder will represent the U.S. in the competition. Casey finished in second place at the championships in the 30K free-style. Joder also competed well in the competition. Casey, from Sun Valley, Id. has set the goal of making the 2002 Olympic team. The World Cup will provide tremendous exposure and experience. Joder, of Landgrove, VT. also has Olympic aspirations.
U.S. Nordic Director Luke Bodensteiner was quotes as saying: "This is a nice mix of veterans and young skiers on their way up. There isn't a lot of World Cup racing experience, so this will be a good week for gaining experience on the Olympic Course, and for the young racers to see what it takes to succed at the highest level."
Race Schedule:
Wednesday: Men's mass-start 30K free-style, women's "pursuit" (5K classic/5K free-style)
Saturday: Men's 15K classic, women's 4x5 mixed relay
Sunday: Sprints on 1.5K course
