In the first day of alpine competition at the University of Nevada Invitational held in Squaw Valley, Calif., the University of Utah ski team currently posts second place in the standings. Day one competition featured the men and women's giant slalom events.
Utah's success was in large part due to their impressive performance in the men's competition. Scott Woodland and Jernej Bukovec took podium honors with second and third place finishes respectivelly, followed by Jed Schuetze who gave the Utes an eighth place finish. The trio combined for 62 points for Utah in the 39 skier field, distancing themselves from Colorado whose top three combined for only 57.
The women's team rode on the second place performance of Petra Svet, who earned her first-ever podium finish for the Utes. Annik Boulva gave the Utes an eighth place performance, but the next best Utah finisher was Christina Babilis, who placed a modest 25th. The women's team sits in a third place tie with New Mexico with 46 points, trailing Colorado (54) and Denver (53).
With the two efforts combined, Utah is second only to Colorado in the standings, as they trail by just three points. Denver is a distant third. Competition will continue Sunday, Dec. 14 with the men and women's slalom to wrap up the event.
