The first half of the University of Utah Invitaional kicked off Thursday, Jan. 4 at the Eagle Arena in Park City. The competition featured the men and women's giant slalom events. After the first day of competition, Utah sits in third place, 15 points behind the University of Colorado and 13 behind the University of Denver. The Utes hope to improve their standing in Friday's competition. "We need to improve in the middle," said Ute skier Jernej Bukovec. "We had a couple people do well, but we need to go deeper. Everyone needs to do well."
Jernej Bukovec led the men's squad with a first place finish. Bukovec, who was eighth after the day's first run, moved into first with an impressive performance in the second. Freshman April Mancuso led the women's effort with a second place finish. "It is amazing," said Mancuso. "To do so well in my first college race is a great feeling. I am looking forward to the slalom race, and hopefully, I can do it again." The slalom will take place Friday Jan. 5 with the men's run beginning 9:30 a.m. and the women's starting at 10:30 a.m.
The second half of the invitational will take place Jan. 15-16 at Soldier Hollow and will be host to the cross country events.
The Cross Country team is on the road at the Nevada Invitaional being held in McCall Idaho. After the first day of events, the Utes trail Denver and Colorado, but attain the third place position. Petter Svendsen led the Utes with a fifth place finish, while Patrick Casey finished eighth, respectivelly. The women were led by Lene Pedersen with a seventh place finish.
Cross Country competetion will continue at the Nevada Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 6, then will finish with the Alpine events on Dec. 13-14 at Squal Valley, California.
