Provo, Utah - In the second day of competition in the BYU Invitational, one Ute remains undefeated. Utah's own Ellen Svensson advances to the finals in singles by defeating Sonja Hannson from Colorado State, 4-6, 7-6, 10-8 and Lorena Arias from Washington State. Svensson will take on BYU's Dominique Reynolds for the championship Saturday at 10:00.
In other singles competition, Cassie Kasteler rallied through her opponents and squared off against BYU's Lu Oswald in the semifinals. After two tough sets Kasteler lost to Oswald, 6-3, 6-3. Alison Hansen defeated Alissa Avling from Boise State in the opening round, but was later defeated by Washington State's Zsofi Fodor, 6-4, 6-1. Sheri Esrock also won her first round match up against Chelsea Drews from Weber State, 6-1, 6-2. But after a hard fought battle against Orse Sallai from Washington State Esrock was defeated, 6-4, 7-6. Linn Ronnberg fell in three close sets to Sonja Hannson from Colorado State, 4-6, 7-6, 10-8. Hilary Doyle was defeated by Anna Curtolo from Boise State, 6-2, 6-0.
In doubles, Utah's Irini Kotoglou and Ronnberg defeated Curtolo and Ayling in the opening round, 8-5. But in the second round they fell to Reynold and Lindsay Ferrell, 8-2. Kasteler and Svensson faced off against Fodor and Zorana Rogonovic from Washington State. Kasteler and Svensson couldn't quite hold on as they were defeated, 8-3. Doyle and Hansen were eliminated by Lorena Arias and Chris Martinez from Washington State, 8-2.
The Utes will continue play Saturday, Oct. 13th at 10:00. Next up Utah will travel to Tulsa, Okla. to compete in the Central Region Championship. This event will be held Oct. 24-28 and times are still to be decided.
