THIS WEEK: The University of Utah soccer team (6-5, 0-2 MWC) will continue conference play this week at home. The Utes will take to the field against New Mexico on Sunday, October 21 at Ute Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
PREVIEW: New Mexico (2-8-2, 1-0-1 MWC) earned their first conference victory against Air Force last week. In their conference opener, the Lobos tied with Wyoming. Freshman Coco D'Angelo leads the team in points (5) with two goals and one assist on the season.
REVIEWING LAST WEEK: Beginning conference play on the road, the Utes dropped their first two Mountain West Conference matches to San Diego State and UNLV.
A tough-fought match against San Diego State wound up in overtime after being tied 1-1 at the end of regulation. Utah had an opportunity to win with an Amber Brower shot which was deflected onto the crossbar by a defender. The Aztecs took advantage by scoring and taking the 2-1 victory.
The Utes took an early lead against UNLV with Amy Kofoed's fifth goal of the season. Utah goalkeeper Courtney Hillshad four saves in the first period to keep the Rebels in check and give the Utes a 1-0 advantage at the break. UNLV took charge in the second period, scoring the tying goal within 25 seconds of the second period kickoff. Down the stretch, Utah committed a costly foul, giving the Rebels a free kick. Though the free kick was unsuccessful, UNLV rebounded the shot and scored a goal to take a 2-1 win.
UTE NOTES:
*Amy Kofoed's goal against UNLV was the 39th of her career, breaking Staci Burt's (Carolina Courage) school record of 38. Kofoed leads the Utes in points (14) with five goals and four assists.
*Lynnsey Asay suffered her first loss of the season against San Diego State. Sharing time at goalkeeper with Courtney Hills, Asay has earned a 4-1 record this season and has three shutouts to her credit.
*The Utes are happy to return home and are hoping to recover from a three-match losing streak. Utah is a perfect 4-0 at home this season. With their next three conference matches at home, Utah is hoping to climb up in the MWC standings.
