SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's soccer team posted its fourth shutout of the season and third at Ute Field when it held the Cincinnati Bearcats scoreless in a 0-0 draw on Wednesday night.
The Utes' (5-4-2, 0-1-1 Big 12) defense smothered the Bearcats (2-3-5, 0-1-1 Big 12) all night, holding the visitors to just three total shots and only one on goal, an easy save by
Erin Gibbs in the 19th minute. Utah held a 19-5 shot advantage and led 4-1 in shots on goal, but the Utes were held scoreless despite a number of strong scoring chances.
"The bottom line is we need to find a way to score and win games," said coach Hideki Nakada. "Once again, we controlled the match but failed to capitalize on our chances. We simply have to be more clinical in front of goal. The positive is that we are playing well, now it's about executing better in the final third.
"We have a great opportunity on Saturday against a very good West Virginia team and we're looking forward to it."
Brooklyn Blacklock put Utah's first shot on goal in the 13th minute, going coast-to-coast up the left side of the field before cutting into the box and sending in a powerful right-footer that was knocked away by the diving keeper. It set up a Utah corner kick, but
Mia Paugh's header flew just outside the right post.
Kelly Bullock threatened again in the 28th minute when her shot from way outside the box curled over the hand of the Cincinnati keeper but slipped just outside the far post.
Bella Woods sent another dangerous try from beyond the 18 towards the top of the netting just before the half, but it was turned away to keep the two sides deadlocked at the half.
Utah kept up the offensive intensity early in the second half, as
Ryann Cull sent another outside-the-box missile on goal in the 49th minute that was once again turned away by the Cincinnati keeper. Minutes later, Bullock was able to draw a foul just outside the box to set up a free kick for Woods, but her attempt deflected off the right post and out of play.
Cincinnati controlled the ball for the next 20 minutes of play, but the Utah defense was able to hold the Bearcats without a strong scoring chance. The Utes started to regain the offensive momentum in the final minutes of play as
Shannon Davidson generated a pair of scoring chances, Cull put a threatening shot on target in the 85th minute and
Ali Swensen had a long-distance try sail just wide 60 seconds later, but neither team could find the game-winner before time expired.
The result marked Utah's first shutout in Big 12 play this season and its seventh since joining the conference last season. The Utes five total shots permitted matched the second-fewest they've given up in a game in 2025.
