SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's soccer team fell to the Arizona State Sun Devils, 1-0, in front of 665 fans at Ute Field on Thursday night.
The Sun Devils were able to convert on their lone shot on goal in the 84th minute to seal the win on a night where Utah held the lead in shots (22-7), shots on goal (8-1) and corner kick opportunities (8-4).
With two matches left in the 2025 regular season, Utah now sits at 7-8-3 overall and 2-5-2 in league play.
"I really feel for our players tonight," said coach
Hideki Nakada. "We dominated in every facet of the game, but somehow it just didn't go our way. It's hard to believe we dropped this game considering how many chances we created and that we only gave up one shot on goal."
The Utes nearly found the first score of the night in just the fifth minute, but
Lilliah Blum's attempt flew just over the crossbar. Neither side was able to find much footing in the first half hour of the match, with the game largely being played in the midfield, until Blum made a run up the right side of the field and sent a cross towards
Abby Affleck in the box. The freshman's shot flew just wide of the far post, and the game stayed scoreless with 15 minutes left in the opening half.
Callie Blaylock generated Utah's best scoring chance of the half, sending a left-footer curling towards the far post in the 40th minute that just deflected off the fingertips of the ASU keeper and out of play. The Utes got two corner kick looks but were unable to convert, and the two sides went into the half locked in a scoreless draw.
Grace Watkins, making her return to the pitch after missing the last two games, sent two shots towards goal in the first 10 minutes of the second half, but the first was saved and the second was just wide. Utah was able to keep pressure on the ASU defense, drawing a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box in the 62nd minute, but
Bella Woods' attempt was blocked by the wall of Sun Devil defenders.
In the 71st minute, Blaylock placed a header that perfectly led
Ali Swensen downfield, but the senior's shot in the bottom-left corner was stopped by a diving save.
Arizona State was able to break the draw in the 84th minute off a corner kick. The Utes threatened in the final few minutes, earning three corner kicks, but could not find the last-second equalizer.
"Sunday is a must-win game," said Nakada, "and we still have an opportunity to make the NCAA Tournament. We'll do everything we can to get ready and give ourselves the best chance to come out on top."
