WACO, Texas - The University of Utah women's soccer team was defeated 2-0 by the No. 10 Baylor Bears on Sunday afternoon in Big 12 Conference action at Betty Lou Mays Field in Waco, Texas.
Utah is now 7-7-3 in 2025 and 2-4-2 in league play.
"We put in a strong effort today against a top-10 Baylor team," said coach
Hideki Nakada. "I thought the game was pretty even overall. Unfortunately, the difference came down to two set-piece goals, which is disappointing because I felt we played well enough to earn at least a point. We'll move on quickly and get ready for a big home game on Thursday night against Arizona State."
Excellent defense from both sides meant no shots were registered for the first 23 minutes of the match and Utes didn't allow a single scoring try until the 32nd minute. Unfortunately for the visitors, Baylor's second shot of the match was headed in for a goal in the 34th minute.
The Utes produced a chance late in the period when a ball into the box from
Ryann Cull arrived at the feet of
Ali Swensen, but Swensen's shot was deflected out of bounds and the subsequent corner kick was cleared by the Bears.
Utah nearly equalized early after the break, when a corner kick found
Ava Hetzel inside the box, only for Hetzel's well-stuck shot to end up in the arms of the goalkeeper and the Utes remained down one.
Hetzel was also active on the back line, making a couple fantastic second-half plays to keep the Utes within striking distance. The first one came in the 66th minute, when she cleared a shot from Lauren Augustyn off the goal line. In the 74th minute, graduate fullback denied Baylor again, booting away a header from Nyela Calnek just before it could become a score.
Those would not be the Bears' only opportunities, however. In the 85th minute, Blythe Obar lofted a shot towards the net from 25 yards out that just snuck under the crossbar to make the score 2-0. That deficit proved too much for Utah to overcome.

The Utes will finish the regular season with a stretch of three straight matches at home, starting on Thursday, when they'll host the Arizona State Sun Devils at 7 p.m.
