Davidson scores in 2-1 loss
ST. GEORGE, Utah - Shannon Davidson scored her first goal of the 2026 season, but the University of Utah women's soccer team ended up on the short end of a 2-1 score against the Utah Tech Trailblazers on Sunday night at Greater Zion Stadium in St. George, Utah.
Utah now owns a mark of 2-2-1.
"When you dominate possession the way we did tonight," said coach Hideki Nakada, "you can leave yourself vulnerable to counterattacks, and Utah Tech did a good job of taking advantage of those opportunities. We'll regroup quickly and get ourselves ready for a very good Oregon team that comes in undefeated. It's another great challenge for us, and we'll do everything we can to get ready for it."
Right off the bat, the Utes controlled the pace of the match, earning corners in the fifth and sixth minutes and Jastel David unleashed the team's first shot in the eighth minute, but it went wide.
After a pair of Anna Solomon stops moments later kept the scoreline clean, Utah went back to the attack and a 25th minute shot by Abby Affleck off a cross from Davidson was deflected just wide by goalkeeper Elle Rafajko. In the 29th minute, Kori Pickelle maneuvered her way into the left side of the box, but her try was parried wide as well.
In the 38th minute, a Utah steal just outside the 18 freed up Emmanuella Yapi for a shot, but Rafajko was again on the spot to make a save. Affleck had one more go in the 43rd minute, but it flew over the bar and both sides arrived at the break scoreless.
The Utes immediately went on the attack to start the second half and a Davidson shot from just outside the 18 in the 46th minute found its target to put Utah on the board first. Davidson, who also has two assists to her credit as well in 2026, has registered a point in three of Utah's first five matches.
Moments later, however, the Trailblazers went on the offensive and Abby Olsen slotted home the tying goal with left-footed effort from 20 yards out. Solomon kept the match even with two saves soon after, including a one-on-one chance for Ella Cotter in the 20th minute that the Utah keeper denied.
The next few opportunities were created by the visitors, starting with a 56th minute shot on goal by Sophie Bellini that was saved. That chance did also yield a corner, but Ava Martinez's header was cleared off the goal line and another try off the foot of Bellini was stopped by Rafajko.
In the 68th minute, Nevaeh Peregrina nearly converted on a free kick from 35 yards out, but Rafajko was able to tip the ball off the crossbar and a Utah Tech clearance ended that opportunity. In the 70th minute, Utah Tech took advantage of a chance on a counter when a Lataya Brost through ball sent Jocelyn Wright on goal and Wright's shot found the back of the net to make the score 2-1.
Utah's best chance to draw level came in the 77th minute, when a perfect through ball into the box by Davidson found Affleck, but her shot bounced off the post and out and, after she regained possession, a second try was deflected wide. The Utes piled up nine more shots over the final 15 minutes, two of which were on-target, but the tying goal proved to be out of reach.
The effort put forth by the Utes was evident on the stat sheet, with the visitors racking up season-high 26 total shots and their 11 on-target efforts are also the most they've had in a game in 2026. Utah owned an 8-0 edge in corners as well. Seven different Utes were credited with at least three shots, led by Abby Affleck's six. Bellini and Pickelle both logged multiple shots on goal. In net, Solomon's four saves matched her season-high.
