Utah outshoots BYU, 18-13, but fall 2-0
SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's soccer team fell to the BYU Cougars, 2-0, to wrap up the 2025 regular season at Ute Field on Thursday night.
"Like so many games this season," said coach Hideki Nakada, "we played more than well enough to get a result, but finding the back of the net just didn't happen for us tonight.
"A heartfelt thank you to our outgoing seniors: Kelly, Brooklyn, Ryann, Ali, Grace, Ava, Alex, Devi, and Erin. Each of them has given so much to this program and I can't thank them enough for their commitment, leadership, and the energy they've brought both on and off the field over the years.
"They've left a lasting impact on this team and set a tremendous example for the younger players to follow. Their legacy will continue to shape our program for years to come."
BYU used a pair of early goals to take a two-goal lead at the half. Utah outshot the Cougars 14-7 in the second period but was unable to find a goal to mount a comeback. Utah finished the night with more shots (18-13), but BYU held the advantage in shots on goal (6-5), saves (5-4) and corner kick opportunities (7-2).
BYU got on the board first in the eighth minute after a ball deflected off Brooklyn Blaylock and fell to the foot of a Cougar attacker, who snuck a shot between Erin Gibbs and the near post to take a 1-0 lead. Ryann Cull had a chance to answer for the Utes in the 13th minute after Lilliah Blum drew a free kick just outside the 18-yard box, but the senior's attempt was blocked by the BYU back line.
Utah continued to bring the pressure offensively, as Blaylock and Blum each sent dangerous shots on target that were turned away by the diving keeper. BYU responded with a scoring chance of its own, but Gibbs made a pair of stellar saves herself to push the ball up and over the crossbar.
BYU doubled its advantage with a goal in the 26th minute. Utah was unable to generate another shot before the halftime whistle blew and went into the locker room trailing 2-0.
The Utes came out of the half aggressive, taking eight shots in the first 15 minutes of the second period, but only one was on goal and was saved by the BYU keeper. Utah's best chance of the night came in the 76th minute when Callie Blaylock and Ali Swensen both had shots blocked from inside the 18-yard box.
Shannon Davidson put a shot on goal in the 85th minute but it was turned away and the Utes could not muster another scoring chance before time ran out.
