SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 defeat to the LSU Tigers on Sunday afternoon at Ute Field in Salt Lake City.
Utah's record now stands at 4-2-1.
"I'm very disappointed in today's showing," said coach Hideki Nakada. "We came out flat and put ourselves in a difficult position in the first half. Any time you put yourself in a position where you are chasing the game, it's always going to be difficult to get back in the game against a quality team like LSU. We will absolutely learn from this and make sure it doesn't happen again."
The Tigers took the initiative in the opening half and found the first score of the match in the 15th minute. Sariyah Bailey went on a run down the left side of the attacking zone and sent in a left-footed shot that deflected off a teammate and into the net.
LSU found a second score courtesy of Ava Galligan in the 43rd minute and that 2-0 lead remained intact at halftime.
The Utes tried their best to make up the deficit over the final 45 minutes. They out-shot their guests in final half, 9-0 and earned all nine corners that were awarded. Utah's opportunities included a blast from
Ali Swensen taken from inside the 18 that nearly beat the keeper, one of her team-high four efforts on the day.
Grace Watkins and
Kelly Bullock also took multiple tries, but the goal that would pull the Utes to within one failed to materialize.
The match did end with the home team holding a 15-5 advantage in shots, the sixth time in seven contests the Utes have held the edge in that statistic.
