Salt Lake City - The No. 18th ranked University of Utah women's volleyball team recorded an upset win over the Brigham Young Cougars in five games, 30-25, 25-30, 30-32, 30-26, 15-12 on Fri., Oct. 19, at Crimson Court in front of the second largest crowd in Utah women's volleyball history. Utah improves to 13-4 overall, 6-2 in the MWC. Brigham Young falls to 12-4 on the season, 6-2 in MWC play.
Sophomore Kim Turner racked up 18 kills and McKelle Stilson had 16 kills and set a career-high 372 block assists to lead the Utes past the Cougars. Turner hit for .333, while Stilson hit for .310. Junior Katrena Ellett notched 13 kills for a team high .357 hitting percentage. Junior Sylva Strzinkova totaled 18 digs, while Jackie Morrill posted 35 assists and 13 digs. Freshman Kelsie Kartchner notched 28 assists in the match. As a team Utah posted an .218 hitting percentage. Utah racked up 15.5 blocks in the match.
For the Cougars, Nina Puikkonen totaled 24 kills for a .500 hitting percentage. Sunny Mahe added 16 kills. Karina Puikkonen posted 62 assists and Natalie Whittaker had 15 digs. BYU hit for .180 in the match.
"I thought BYU played really well, truthfully I thought we were in trouble," said Head Coach Beth Launiere. "We played with a lot of pride and courage, every play is critical for us to get the momentum back. I thought we were pressing too tough, but we relaxed and things went out way. I am pleased with the overall play."
UP NEXT: On Tues., Oct. 23 Utah faces the Utah State Aggies at home at 7:00 p.m. The Utes are back on the road on Fri., Oct. 26 vs. New Mexico and on Sat., Oct. 27 vs. Air Force. Match times are set for a 7:00 p.m. start. On Fri., Nov. 2, Utah will host the Wyoming Cowgirls at 7:00 p.m. The Utes will match-up with the Colorado State Rams on Sat., Nov. 3, at 7:00 p.m. at Crimson Court.
