THIS WEEK: With the regular-season play at a close, the Utah women's soccer team (10-6-0, 3-3-0 MWC) will travel to Las Vegas to compete in the Mountain West Conference Women's Soccer Championship tournament. Finishing in a tie with UNLV for third place in the conference, the Utes are the No. 4 seed heading into the conference tournament. Competition will kick off on Wednesday with No. 4 Utah facing off against No. 5 San Diego State at 1:00 p.m. (P.T.). The winner will play against No. 1 BYU on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. (P.T.).
PREVIEW: In the first round of the MWC tournament, the Utes will face off against San Diego State. In the previous meeting on Oct. 11 in San Diego, the Aztecs gave Utah its first conference loss of the season in an intense battle that ended in overtime. SDSU finished the regular season with a 6-10-1 overall and 2-3-1 conference record.
The Aztecs are led by Kim Castellanos, whose 10 goals this season is tied for the conference lead with Utah senior Amy Kofoed and UNLV's Anita Pedford. Castellanos' 22 points ranks only behind Kofoed's 26 and Aleisha Cramer of BYU's 25.
REVIEWING LAST WEEK: The Utes capped off a four-match win streak by defeating a Utah State 2-0 on Nov. 1. Amy Kofoed scored her 10th goal of the season to give the Utes an early lead in the first period. Shauna Gurr-Bingham sealed the game for Utah by scoring her eighth goal of the year at the beginning of the second period.
With a piece of the MWC regular-season title on the line, Utah traveled to take on BYU on Nov. 3. The Cougars attacked the net early, taking nine shots in the first period while limiting the Utes to three. In the 30th minute, Kim Devine scored the game's first goal for the Cougars off of a Lydia Ojuka and Jeni Viernes assist. In the second period, BYU kept up the pressure, taking another 14 shots and scoring two more goals by Ojuka and Aleisha Cramer. The Cougars outshot Utah 23-8 and defeated the Utes, 3-0. The win sealed the regular season title for BYU and gave the Cougars the No. 1 seed for the conference tournament. The loss knocked the Utes to 3-3 in conference play to give them the No. 4 seed.
UTE NOTES:
*Senior Amy Kofoed leads the the Utes in goals (10), assists (6) and points (26). Her 26 points is the best in the Mountain West Conference. She is tied for the conference lead in goals with San Diego State's Kim Castellanos and UNLV's Anita Pedford. Her six assists are tied for second in the conference with three other players, trailing only BYU's Aleisha Cramer.
*Junior Shauna Gurr-Bingham is just five assists away from the school record of 21 career assists, held by Staci Burt (Carolina Courage).
*Gurr-Bingham finished the regular season with eight goals, which is tied with Air Force's Beth Boyer for sixth in the conference. Her 20 points finished in a three-way tie for seventh and her four assists tied seven other players for the eighth best output in the conference.
*Goalkeeper Lynnsey Asay's loss at BYU was her second of the season. Asay finished regular season play with an 8-2 record. Asay's five shutouts was second in the MWC behind BYU's Jennifer Waldron.
