No. 16/17 Ranked Utes Roll Past Wyoming

Laramie, Wyo. - The No. 16/17 ranked University of Utah women's basketball team rolled past the Wyoming Cowgirls, 69-36, on Thurs., Feb. 15, in Laramie, Wyo. The Utes improve to 21-2 overall, 10-0 in the Mountain West Conference. Wyoming falls to 9-13 overall, 1-8 in MWC play.
Utah went on an 18-6 run with 7:31 left in the first half, and went into the break leading, 33-18. The Utes scored 32 points in the paint and 31 points off turnovers. Utah recorded 15 assists, 14 steals and four blocks in the game.
For the Utes, junior Erin Gibbons came off the bench to score 12 points in 11 minutes of play. Gibbons went 4-of-5 from behind the arc, with one assist and zero tunovers in the game. Senior Amy Ewert scored nine points and five rebounds. Ewert went 4-of-7 from the field, 1-of-2 from 3-point range and racked up five assists and three steals. Teammate Kristina Andersen added nine points and four boards. Utah went 28-of-51 (55 percent) from the field, a season-high 58 percent (7-of-12) from three-point range and 86 percent (6-of-7) from the free-throw line.
For the Cowgirls, Jessica Gibbs scored 10 points and 10 rebounds. Teammate Ann McColl scored 15 points, respectively. Wyoming shot 31 percent from the field (13-of-42), 17 percent from behind the arc (2-of-12) and 73 percent from the free-throw line (8-of-11).
"We weren't to sharp passing the ball, but we shot well early and Lori (Red-Castagnetto) took them out of their zone," said Head Coach Elaine Elliott. "All in all, we are really glad for the win and this was a game that we were concerned about. I give Wyoming a lot of credit, those kids played so hard. We did a lot better job in the second half and I'm happy for the win," said Elliott.
AFTER THIS: Utah will meet Colorado State on Sat., Feb. 17 in Fort Collins, Colo., at 4:00 p.m. On Fri., Feb. 23, Utah will travel to Provo, Utah to take on the Cougars of Brigham Young at 7:00 p.m. The Utes are back at home on Thurs., Mar. 1, when they face the Air Force Falcons at 7:00 p.m. Utah hosts New Mexico in its final regular-season game on Sat., Mar. 3, at 3:00 p.m. in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. Utah will vie for its second-straight MWC tournament championship on Mar. 7-10, in Las Vegas, Nev.
