OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLA.- The University of Utah women's swimming and diving team had a record-breaking day two of the Mountain West Conference Championships. Utah is standing strong in third-place with a score of 183 points behind first-place Brigham Young (358.50) and Colorado State (255). Ute men rank fifth with 88 points behind UNLV (306), BYU (290), Air Force (198), and Wyoming (132).
On the women's side, Ute All-American Heidi Hausknecht won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.78, for the second year. Her time (22.78) broke the conference record (23.81) held by Heidi Leitz of BYU and her previous school record of 23.21. Hausknecht also qualified for the NCAA Championships in the B bracket. She will be joined at the NCAA's by teammate Sarah Norton, who was third in the same event with a time of 23.22.
Freshman Kristen Kaiser, broke her second school record of the season in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:55.59, beating the previous record set by Lisa Ripken (4:56.93) in 1996. Kaiser was third in the event.
Jamie Wayman came in 12th in the 200 IM (2:08.82). Diver Jill Comins, came in fourth in the 3-meter diving event. The relay team of Amber Nye, Melissa Chamberlin, Hausknecht, and Norton were third in the 400-yard medley relay.
On the men's side, Magnus Lofgren finished seventh in the 500-yard freestyle (4:36.17) and David Fleisch swam to an 11th-place finish in the 200-Yard IM (1:53.26).
Day three of the competition begins Friday at 11:00 a.m. with the 400-yard IM preliminaries. Finals will begin at 6:00 p.m.
