SALT LAKE CITY -
The No. 3 ranked University of Utah gymnastics team upgraded its routines against Utah State and as a result, upgraded its score. The Utes, led by winning all-arounder Deidra Graham, beat instate foe Utah State 197.125-194.325 before a crowd of 10,360 in the Huntsman Center. It was the best score of the year for the Utes and the tenth best score in school history.
Missing all-arounder Kim Allan, out for the season with an Achilles tear suffered in practice on Sunday, Utah nonetheless proceeded with its plans to upgrade difficulty on every event. The strategy paid off, as the Utes opened with a season-best 48.925 on the vault. Veronique Leclerc won her fourth vault title of the season and third in a row, tying Graham for top honors with a 9.850.
Up by a slim 48.925-48.775 margin after one event, the Utes took control on the uneven bars. Freshman Annie Medcalf, Allan's replacement on bars, fell on her first routine of the year to start things off, but no other Ute received lower than a 9.90. Shannon Bowles followed Medcalf's spill with a career-tying 9.90. Theresa Wolf topped that with a career-best 9.925, which tied her for first place, and Leclerc and Graham chipped in 9.90s. Theresa Kulikowski, who has won 14 of the last 15 bar competitions, tied Wolf for first with a 9.925. Utah finished with a season-best 49.550 and was up by a point when the chalk dust cleared, 98.475-97.375.
If bars put Utah in the driver's seat, beam broke the meet wide open. Wolf, whose otherwise great night would place her second in the all-around with a 39.00, fell off the plank in the middle of the lineup, but no one remembered her mistake two competitors later. That's when Kulikowski received a 10.0, followed by Bowles' 9.925. For "Kulio", it marked her second career 10.0 on the beam and her fifth perfect score ever. The win, her second on the night, raised her win total this year to seven, tying her with Graham.
A win securely in hand, the Utes didn't let up on their final event. Wolf made up for her beam error by scoring a career-best 9.925 on the floor exercise to win the event. Utah also took places 2-5 on the mat for their final score of 197.125.
Graham won the all-around for the third time this year and second meet in a row, scoring a 39.275.
Utah returns to action on Friday in Provo, Utah, where they will meet undefeated Brigham Young.
