PROVO,Utah -
Maybe the University of Utah gymnasts should skip practice more often. The No. 3 ranked Utes, competing on just two days' rest and without a real training session, roared to the sixth-best score in school history in a 197.225-196.025 win over Brigham Young in Provo, Friday. The 197.225 broke Utah's previous season best, set three days earlier against Utah State, a 197.125.
Deidra Graham and Theresa Kulikowski stole the headlines again, Graham for her third straight all-around win (39.475) and Kulikowski for her second 10.0 in as many meets.
Kulikowski set the tone for the night on the first event, receiving a 10.0 on the bars. It was her sixth career 10 and second 10.0 this year. On Tuesday, she landed a perfect score on the beam. She edged Graham for first place after Graham set the table for a big score with a career-tying 9.95. Annie Medcalf, competing for just the second time of her career, opened the set with a 9.825 and Utah's 49.550 tied its season best on bars. The Utes were up by .6 after the first event and never relinquished the lead in handing No. 18 BYU its first loss of the year.
Vault was more of the same, where Utah's upgrades resulted in a second-season best in the last two meets. Veronique Leclerc won her fourth straight vault title (fifth this year) with a 9.90, tying her with BYU's Kelly Parkinson. Again, close behind was Graham, with a season-best 9.875. Despite the impressive vault showing, Utah lost ground on the event, seeing its lead cut to .35.
But a floor set that saw Utah throw out a 9.90 gave the Utes the cushion they needed. Shannon Bowles and Theresa Wolf tied for the event title, each with career tying 9.95s, to edge, you guessed it, Graham (9.925). Kylee Wagner also rang up a 9.925, her career best. Five Utes set or tied a career high: Lindsay Tanner (9.90), Wagner (9.925), Melissa Vituj (9.90), Bowles (9.95), Wolf (9.95).
A rare fall by Kulikowski on beam was the only error on the beam, where Bowles took first with a9.90 and Vituj finished second (9.85). Wolf's 9.825 score brought her all-around tally to a career-best 39.450, just shy of Graham's winning 39.475.
