PUEBLO, COLO. - The University of Utah baseball team (19-19, 8-9 MWC) used solid pitching and defense, combined with its steady bats to take a pair of games over Air Force (19-22, 5-12 MWC), 6-1 and 12-2, at Rawlings Field in Pueblo, Colo. The games were moved to Pueblo due to a snow storm in Colorado Springs.
Starting pitcher Travis Palmer went the distance on the mound in game one, allowing one walk and one run on 10 hits. The lone tally by the Falcons came in the bottom of the sixth when Price Paramore singled and scored on a Gerremy Goldsberry single. Nate Weese opened up the scoring for the Utes with a solo home run in the first inning. Palmer surrendered only one hit to the first nine Falcon batters, and ended up getting what would be the decisive run in the fourth inning. Brit Pannier singled and scored on a Mike Westfall double to put Utah ahead 2-0. In the sixth, Chris Shelton hit his first of two home runs on the day, a solo shot for his eleventh of the season. Utah had three twin-killings to end Falcon rallies, including a bases loaded 6-4-3 double play in the fourth. Utah then scored three run with two outs in the seventh inning. Tommy Maestas and Weese singled, while Shelton was walked to load the bases. Sam Swenson was hit by a pitch forcing home Maestas. Pannier then drove in two runs with a single up the middle.
Shelton continued his assault of Falcon pitching, going 4-for-4 with four RBI in the second game. The Utes went out front 5-0 into the top of the third inning. Shelton and Swenson had RBI doubles and Pannier blasted a two-run home run. Utah extended its lead to 8-0 in the fifth when Shelton hit a two-run shot into the seats. The Falcons scored in the bottom of the fifth on a Utah error, and added on one more score with a solo home run in the eight inning by Mike Thiessen. Jason Wylie, Utah's game two starter, relinquished only five hits in seven innings and allowed only one unearned run. He fanned nine Air Force hitters. Sean Overholt threw a scoreless ninth for Utah.
The three-game series concludes Saturday at 9 a.m. in Pueblo.
