BOZEMAN, Mont. - Junior Petra Svet returned to championship form for the University of Utah ski team with a first place finish in the giant slalom at the Montana State University Invitational on Friday. With a strong performance by the men's alpine team, Utah holds on to second place after the first day of competition. The Utes trail Denver by half a point in the overall standings.
Svet set the quickest times in both runs in the women's GS. Freshman Madeailene Sparks-Krebs contributed top-10 results by finishing in a tie for sixth place. Kristina Babilis finished in 24th, followed by Danielle Bird in 25th and Annik Boulva in 37th.
The men's team had the top results in the GS for the day, led by newcomer Pierre Olsson who finished in second place. Olsson had the quickest time in the first run. Senior Scott Woodland finished in seventh, while freshman Josh Whitham finished eighth. The defending national slalom champion, Jernej Bukovec finished 11th.
The men's and women's slalom competition will take place on Saturday, with the nordic events wrapping up the invite on Jan. 9-10.
