RENO, Nev. - The University of Utah ski team wrapped up competition at the University of Nevada Invitational on Monday, grasping a second place finish. With a strong performance from the women's cross country team, the Utes passed Colorado, but were unable to overcome Denver in the overall standings.
Sophomore Jorunn Oye led a Ute three-four-five finish in the women's 10K freestyle. Oye place third, followed by Jaana Kettunen in fourth and Sara Svendsen in fifth. Newcomer Denise Whitten added a top-ten finish by placing ninth.
Utah native, Zack Simons, earned his first podium finish of the season by placing third in the men's 15K freestyle. Senior Petter Svendsen followed with a sixth place finish and Ryan Quinn placed 17th.
In the women's giant slalom, Petra Svet secured a sixth place finish for the Utes. Annik Boulva and April Mancuso wrapped up Utah's scoring by finishing 12th and 13th, respectively.
Kristian Guay headlined the men's alpine team with a seventh place finish in the giant slalom. Jernej Bukovec placed 10th and Josh Whitham placed 16th.
Overall, the Utes trailed Denver by 32 points, finishing ahead of Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico and Alaska Anchorage.
The Utes will take a week off before traveling to the Denver Invitational on Jan.. 25-26.
