THIS WEEK: The women's tennis team is back at home after suffering two tough defeats on the road. The Utes are coming off an extended road trip in Las Vegas, Nev. The Utes were ousted by both No. 53 San Diego State and No. 27 UNLV, 7-0. These two defeats dropped their perfect Mountain West Conference record to 1-2 and brought their overall record to 7-9 on the season.
THE UTES: The women netters had their hands full as they took on these two top-seeded opponents. Against San Diego State, senior Linn Ronnberg was etched by Silvia Tornier, 6-3, 6-2 Tornier was last week's MWC Player of the Week. Sheri Esrock was notched out by Lindsey Hedberg, 7-5, 6-4 and captain Irini Kotoglou was edged by Katja Karrento, 7-5, 6-0.
The Rebels of UNLV boasted two nationally ranked players, which gave the Utes some trouble. Esrock was defeated by No. 71 ranked Paulina Janus, 6-1, 6-1 and Ronnberg was etched by No. 88 Gyorgyi Zsiros, 7-6, 6-0.
COMING UP: Utah will have a one game homestand before returning to the road. The Utes will be competing against New Mexico. The (7-7) Lobos are just coming off a upset against No. 39 ranked Boise State, 4-3. This was the second nationally ranked team New Mexico has defeated this season. The Lobos also defeated No. 53 ranked San Diego, 4-3. The match will be played Fri, Mar. 29 at 1:00 p.m. at the Salt Lake Tennis and Swimming Club.
QUOTING TSUMAS: "We are not dwelling on our past defeats," says head coach John Tsumas. "We are looking forward not backwards. This is a big match for us and we are very determined to get back on track."
