Utes Give Top-Ranked Lobos A Scare

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The University of Utah's women's tennis team came up short against No. 52 ranked New Mexico, 4-3. Utah was in perfect contention to win the match, but just didn't have enough down the stretch. "We failed to finish our leads," says head coach John Tsumas. This is the Utes tenth nationally ranked team they have confronted this season. All of Utah's defeats have come from top-seeded opponents. This fourth straight loss pulls the Utes at 7-10 on the season and 1-3 in the Mountain West Conference.
In singles action, senior Linn Ronnberg held two set point leads before being defeated by Tjasa Suvak, 7-6, 6-0. Sheri Esrock went into an extended set to edge out Sandy Lukowski, 6-4, 6-7, 7-6. Cassie Kasteler notched Michelle Heidbrink, 7-6. 6-2. Ellen Svensson was victorious over Rachel Hatley, 7-5, 6-3 and freshman Allison Hansen was up 4-3 before losing her lead to Courtney Choate. Hansen was eventually ousted by Choate, 6-4, 6-4.
In doubles action, the Utes couldn't hold off the red hot Lobos. The Irini Kotoglou and Hansen duo were defeated by Lukowski and Robertson, 8-6. Ronnberg and Esrock teamed up to face Suvak and Hatley, but were ousted 8-6 and Svensson and Kasteler were beat out by Choate and Heidbrink, 8-4.
Next week, the Utes will be taking on Wyoming and Colorado State. These two matches will be held in Laramie, Wyo. The Wyoming match will be played Sat., Apr. 6, at 10:00 a.m. and the Colorado State match is Sun., Apr. 7 at 10:00 a.m.
