SALT LAKE CITY -
John Tsumas, the University of Utah's women's tennis coach for the past 15 seasons, tendered his resignation today to Utah associate director of athletics Amy Hackett. Tsumas plans to relocate to Florida.
"I have had a great experience at the U.," said Tsumas. "It will be hard to leave the athletes because they've worked so hard, but building the program to national recognition will be one of my fondest memories. It has been exciting and rewarding to see what this program has accomplished and I hope it continues. It was a great run and I wish the program all the success in the world."
Tsumas, the 1990-91 Region Coach of the Year and a finalist for National Coach of the Year, compiled a 144-187 record since becoming head Ute coach back in the 1987-88 season. Under Tsumas, Utah was ranked in the top 25 for three consecutive seasons, from 1990-92, and the Utes played in the NCAA Tournament in 1996, '97 and '98. Utah finished second at the conference championships in each of his first seven years and was sixth at last week's Mountain West Conference Championships.
Playing against a nationally competitive schedule every year, Tsumas finished at .500 or better five times with four winning seasons. Two of his players were named to the 1992 ITA All-America team and he had 13-all-conference singles players and 17 all-conference doubles teams. He also coached six ITA All-America scholar-athletes and 100 percent of his athletes graduated in his 15 years.
A former Ute tennis player, Tsumas starred at the U. from 1980-84 and competed in the NCAA Championships three years.
"We appreciate all of John's hard work and dedication throughout the years," said Hackett after accepting his resignation. "He has given a lot to the program and we wish him well."
Hackett will conduct a national search for his replacement.
