THIS WEEK:
The University of Utah cross country ski team will finish up the Montana Invitational as they compete in the 15/20 km classical and 5/10 km freestyle events. The 15/20 CL will be skied Friday, Jan. 17, followed by the 5/10 FS, which will be held Saturday, Jan. 18. The races will be skied in Bozeman, Montana.
The Ute alpine team placed second overall in the Montana Invitational, Jan. 3-4, after competing in both the giant slalom and slalom events.
LAST WEEK:
Utah finished second overall while hosting the Alaska-Utah WinterGames Invitational. The cross country team skied extremely well in the first day (Jan. 12), recording a first-place finish by the men and a second-place performance by the women. Day two (Jan. 13) was much the same as Jess Kiesel and Torin Koos rallied to second-and third-place finishes in the 15 km classical. Senior Zack Simons added a fifth-place finish to round out the scores.
Katrin Smigun skied remarkably well, once again placing first in the 10 km classical. Junior Sara Svendsen, who was unable to ski the first day due to illness, finished sixth and sophomore Barbro Hatlevik skied to an 11th-place finish.
The alpine team managed to finish with a strong fourth-place standing, after mishap and misfortune haunted the Utes throughout the giant slalom and slalom disciplines. The men's alpine team was unable to pull it together as they finished third in the GS and a program-low seventh in the SL.
The giant slalom event was headed by Petra Svet for the women, as she finished in first-place, while sophomore Elisha Stephans skied to a seventh-place finish. In the slalom event, the senior Svet continued to shine finishing seventh, followed by teammate Rowena Bright who skied ninth in the event.
QUOTING COACH KEVIN SWEENEY:
"My focus is to carry the momentum of our last invite into this trip to Bozeman. I want to compliment the alpine team's results by finishing the Montana Invitational strong. We need to keep it together and stay consistent. We have a two-week break after this trip, which our team really needs to prepare for the middle half of our season. I think if we stay focused and motivated, we will be tough to beat in future meets."
NEXT WEEK:
The Utes will travel to Boulder, Colo. to compete in the Colorado Invitational. The alpine team will ski the giant slalom (Jan. 31) and the slalom (Feb. 1), while the cross country team will compete in the 5/10 freestyle (Jan. 31) and the 5/10 classical (Feb. 1). The start times are still TBA.
