The No. 2 ranked University of Utah ski team has displayed its disciple and dedication not only on the slopes this season, but also in the classroom as 17 student-athletes made the fall semester honor roll. Of those, seven were named to the Dean's List by earning a 3.5 GPA or higher.
For the men's squad: Zack Simons, Tony Bozzio and Anders Hansson were named to the Dean's List, while Jernej Bukovec, Torin Koos, Ryan Quinn, Benjamin Thornhill, and Jess Kiesel were named to the honor roll.
On the women's team: April Mancuso, Barbro Hatlevik, Anna Sprague and Kjersti Veum landed Dean's List honors, followed by teammates Petra Svet, Rowena Bright, Lina Johansson and Ashley McQueen who made the honor roll.
The senior Svet, who is currently pursuing her master's degree in finance, is also in the running for other Honor Society academic awards. The former Academic All-American has been nominated for the Beta Gamma Sigma and Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society awards. The winners will be announced later this month.
"It's exciting for me to see how serious my athletes are taking academics," remarks Head Coach Kevin Sweeney. "I'm proud of their achievements in the classroom. We are charging on all fronts right now and this is an exciting time for us. I know our academic success is also assisted by out academic advisor, JoAnn Hulbert-Eagan, who does a great job keeping the student-athletes on track."
Earlier this year, former Ute cross-country skier, Gretchen Domek was selected as a Rhodes Scholar after exceptional achievement in the classroom. Domek is one of just 32 American college students to receive this prestigious award.
