University of Utah football players Morgan Scalley and Alex Smith were named today to the 2003 CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII Football Team. Teammate Spencer Toone was named to the all-District VIII second team.
Scalley, a junior, has won the award for the second straight year, while sophomores Smith and Toone are first-time honorees. Scalley carries a 3.95 cumulative GPA in communication, Smith owns a 3.79 GPA in economics and Toone is a 3.88 student in exercise and sport science. As first-team selections, Scalley and Smith will advance to the national ballot, the results which will be released on Dec. 1.
Scalley has started every game for Utah's 9-2 team and is its third leading tackler (67). He has a team-best 2 interceptions, as well as 4.0 tackles for loss, 2 pass breakups, 1 fumble recovery and a forced fumble. He is also a critical part of Utah's special teams and has returned two kickoffs for a total of 109 yards and a long return of 89 yards.
Since Smith became Utah's starting quarterback in the third game of the season, the Utes have gone 6-1. Just 19 years old, Smith will graduate in May after two years of college classes. He plans to work on an MBA for his final two years of eligibility. He has completed 68% of his passes, second best in school history, and his pass efficiency of 159.34 ranks second in the Mountain West Conference and 10th in the nation. Smith has thrown for 1,714 yards and 13 touchdowns, with just one interception. He is also Utah's second-leading rusher, carrying the ball 98 times for 279 yards and 2 touchdowns. Smith is a two-time MWC Offensive Player of the Week.
Toone has played in all nine games and has started six at rover linebacker. He has 49 total tackles, 2 pass breakups and 2 forced fumbles.
