LAS VEGAS -
First-year Utah head coach Urban Meyer, already honored as the Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year and The Sporting News' National Coach of the Year, received yet another honor today. The Media All-Mountain West Conference team, sponsored by the Las Vegas Review-Journal, named Meyer its coach of the year. Meyer won in a runaway, capturing 93-percent of the total votes.
Ute freshman defensive back Eric Weddle, a second-team TSN Freshman All-American, was named the MWC Defensive Newcomer of the Year by the conference media voters. Making the first team for the MWC champion Utes were junior wide receiver Paris Warren, senior tight end Ben Moa and senior defensive back Dave Revill. Winning second team honors were sophomore quarterback Alex Smith, senior running back Brandon Warfield, senior defensive end Josh Savage and junior kick returner Bo Nagahi. Smith was the runner-up for offensive player of the year behind Colorado State quarterback Bradlee Van Pelt.
Utes making the honorable mention media all-MWC team included senior offensive lineman Thomas Herrion, junior center Max Petersen, sophomore defensive tackle Steve Fifita, senior linebacker Ray Holdcraft, junior defensive back Morgan Scalley, Weddle and Nagahi, as a punt returner. Nagahi's inclusion on the punt return team was a surprise since he has returned just two punts for 13 yards this season.
