This Week
The Utes (11-15, 2-7) host Albertson College (18-6) for a noon doubleheader on Tuesday, April 1, at Ute Field.
This weekend, Utah will travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., for a three-game series vs. Air Force (10-18, 0-9). On Friday, April 4, the Utes face the Falcons at 2 p.m. Game time is 1 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday, April 5 and 6.
Utah Update
The Utes were swept last weekend by Brigham Young 9-5, 6-4, 10-5. It was the third time in four years that the Cougars have swept Utah in a three-game series.
Senior Wick Udy leads Utah with a .397 batting average, while sophomore Brett Sundberg is hitting .345. Senior Jake Jordison leads the Utes with 10 doubles, seven home runs and 21 RBI.
Scouting the Opposition
Albertson College - Junior Mike Moser gave up just one earned run in seven innings of work as the Coyotes salvaged a weekend split with Northwest Nazarene, winning the nightcap, 5-1, after losing the opener, 6-3, Saturday. The win in the opener was the first time the Crusaders have won two games against the Albertson in a single year since 1994.
On the season, the Coyotes are led by Dustin Garcia, who boasts a .381 batting average and a team-high 37 hits. Albertson, an NAIA school, is currently ranked No. 23 nationally.
Air Force - The Falcons went 2-3 at the Hawaii Easter Classic last week, with wins over Hawaii (11-4) and Western Illinois (4-2), and losses to Hawaii (8-7) and Lewis-Clark State (4-3, 3-2). Air Force will play an exhibition game against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox tomorrow.
Though they out-hit opponents .335 to .315, the Falcons have yet to win a conference game this season. They are led by Josh Phifer, who is batting .471 with 49 hits and 35 RBI.
Quoting Head Coach Tim Esmay
"Not only are we concerned about facing a quality non-conference team like Albertson College, but we have some issues of our own that we need to deal with. We are trying to establish some consistency while focusing on our upcoming opponents. We're just ahead of Air Force in the conference standings, so we need to pick up some wins over the weekend."
Series Notes
* Utah trails the all-time series with Albertson College 6-4. The Utes split last year's doubleheader 1-1.
