SALT LAKE CITY - University of Utah freshman Casey Simons has been named to the U.S. Skiing World Junior Championships team after an incredible performance at the U.S. Nationals held in Rumford, Maine.
"Casey is a class act," says Ute Head Coach Kevin Sweeney. "It's fitting for him, Utah and the U.S. Ski Team that he will represent the U.S. in the highest level of competition in the world for juniors. It's a real honor for him and also for us; however, it doesn't really come as a surprise since Casey is one of the most dedicated athletes I have had on the team."
The Park City, Utah, native is a great addition to the team. Simons was a first-place finisher in both the 15-km skate and 10-km sprint at the 2003 U.S. Junior Nationals. In addition, the nordic skier ranked second on the USSA point list in '03. The Ute newcomer was coached by John Callahan from the Park City Nordic Ski Team.
The Simons name is not new to the Ute program, knowing Casey's brother Zack was a four-year competitor and helped Utah to its 11th national championship in 2003. While at Utah, Zack was the winner of the 2003 David Novell Outstanding Skier Award and a great team leader.
"This is a great opportunity for him to ski against the best up-and-coming World Cup stars of the future," says Sweeney. "It's right where he wants to be as he progresses. Myself and the team are very happy for him and give him our full support."
