THIS WEEK:
The University of Utah alpine ski team will open the 2004 campaign by hosting the Utah Invitational in Park City, Utah. The Utes will compete in the giant slalom (Jan. 11) and the slalom (Jan. 12).
The two-day event will be the first half of the Utah Invite. The cross country team will wrap-up the second-half of the invite, skiing in the classical (Jan. 23) and freestyle (Jan. 24) events.
LAST SEASON:
Utah was crowned with its 11th national championship in 2003. The Utes' 131-point victory over runner-up Vermont marked the biggest margin of victory ever at an NCAA Ski Championship.
During the 2003 NCAA Championships, senior Lina Johansson was a gold medalist in the slalom, while junior Ben Thornhill won the giant slalom. Utah entered the championships with 10 all-RMISA performers.
Utah was also home to 10 All-America honorees and 12 Academic All-Americans. Downhill skier Rowena Hyldahl competed in the Alpine World Ski Championships and Pierre Olsson skied in the World University Games. Head Coach Kevin Sweeney was the recipient of the prestigious Don Reddish award after piloting the Utes to the national title.
UTE NEWCOMERS:
The Utes will have a major void to fill after losing two-time NCAA gold medalist Katrin Smigun. Along with Smigun, Utah graduated top-skiers Jernej Bukovec, Torin Koos, Ryan Quinn, Zack Simons and Petra Svet. The coaching staff has done an amazing job bringing in some of the most powerhouse performers to help Utah content for the 2004 national championship.
