SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah swimming and diving teams defeated Denver after the second day of competition Saturday. The women's team won by a score of 188-144, while the men won by a score of 213-121. The women's team improves to 4-0 on the season and 2-0 MWC. The men improve to 1-2, 0-1 MWC.
For the women, Amy Barefield took top honors in the 100 free with a time of 52.93. Junior Ariane Kich and freshman Adrienne Coburn finished first and third respectively in the 200 breast for the Utes. Kich swam a 2:25.72, while Coburn finished with a time of 2:27.75.
Senior Marta Stepanczuk won her second event of the meet in the 500 free with a time of 5:02.19 and Rachael Curci finished second in the event with a time of 5:06.55. In the 200 free relay, Utah's team of Alison McInturff, Barefield, Meghan Demchuk and Jamie Trapp finished first with a time of 1:38.12. In third place was the team of Amber Walker, Leah Jensen, Michelle Blair and Maddie Stapley.
On the men's side, Utah won seven events and claimed the top-three finishes in two events. In the 400 medley relay, the team of Andrew Cole, Evan Castro, Cody Rempfer and Jonathan Larsen finished first with the time of 3:24.22. The team of Sebastian Bedaw, Nick Philpot, Andrew Brown and David Maasberg finished third with a time of 3:34.78.
In the 100 free, Matan Ratz claimed first place with a time of 47.30 and Maasberg finished third with a time of 47.79. In the 200 breast, Rempfer finished first with a time of 2:04.82, out swimming Evan Castro who finished second with a time of 2:10.26 by 5.44 seconds. Sophomore Nick Galen finished third in the event with a time of 2:10.31.
In the 100 fly, Brown took top honors with a 52.41 time, and Jonathan Larsen finished third with a time of 53.12. In the 400 IM, Utah claimed the top-three spots with Nick Galen finishing first (4:10.88), Brown finishing second (4:20.19) and Bedaw finishing third (4:23.82). The Utes finished first and third in the 200 free relay to claim their first victory on the season.
In the diving competitions, Kelsey Patterson continued her streak of undefeated meets by claiming the 1-meter event with a score of 230.55. In the men's 3-meter diving event, Sterling Richards finished first and Damien Brown finished second with scores of 267.98 and 255.83 respectively.
"Our team learned two lessons this weekend," said Head Coach Michael Litzinger. "First, you can swim fast when your tired, and second, we can get things done when we need to.
"Denver swam a great meet, and we are ready for the Indiana University Invitational and our upcoming MWC meets."
Utah travels to Bloomington, Ind., to compete in the Indiana University Invitational Nov. 19-21.
